What is the range of a 5G antenna?

A visitor from New Jersey brought this to our attention today. He was reading on another cell tower lease "expert's" page that the range of a 5G cell tower antenna is 300 to 500 feet, and because of this they will need to build about 250,000 new 5G cell towers. Google even cited this as the correct answer, or as the popular answer.

We beg to differ.

Range
by: Anonymous

500 ft or 500 m is about the same to me when you consider the size of this country. Gonna take a bunch of towers.

Range of a 5G site
by: Piet Vlieg

Both answers are right, or wrong, dependent on how you look at it. The range of a (5G) Antenna is dependent on many variables, most notably antenna gain, input power and frequency band. All other things being equal, the used frequency plays a huge role in range, see the difference in coverage between the 700MHz based T-Mobile network and the 26GHz sites put up by Verizon.
It should also be noted that a cellular system requires two-way communication, with typically the uplink (from user device to cell tower) the limiting factor i.e. the distance a cell tower will radiate is reduced such that the return link will still work!
Lastly the need for indoor or outdoor coverage will make a big difference with high capacity, high frequency signals not very good at penetrating into buildings, hence the small outdoor antennas installed as part of the Verizon roll-out.

The information is incorrect.
by: Steve from Tower Genius

That technical information is incorrect provided by the cell tower lease expert.

5G can optimally reach out to 500 METERS, which is about 1,500 FEET, not 300 feet to 500 feet as is incorrectly indicated in the article. Many people get confused with the metric system.

The range of 5G is 500 meters not 500 feet. Huge difference.
